Gut Glyphs: Uncovering the World within Us

Gut Glyphs is a collaborative educational toolkit for elementary school age children and their parents that explores the mutualistic relationship between humans and microorganisms, through focusing on the ecosystem of the gut microbiome.
The toolkit is segmented into three sections, each tailored to introduce the gut microbiome, showcase its symbiotic relationship with humans and the significant role of diet in maintaining this balance.

The toolkit also integrates tactile tools like stamps and red filters, enhancing the learning experience by making scientific ideas accessible, playful and memorable for young audiences.

The anaglyphic cards, designed to reveal information hiding in plain sight, are guided through the perspective of Lactie, a lactobacillus bacteria, and intended to be a conversation starter that aims to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy and varied diet.
The third interactive segment consists of discussion prompts, designed to foster dialogue between children and parents. These conversations are intended to foster a collective learning experience that bridges generational knowledge gaps. As recent studies show a knowledge deficit about 3 in 5 adults unaware of the potential consequences around poor gut health, the toolkit’s prompts on diet, health, and the interconnectedness of living systems outlines the potential to influence beneficial family health practices.
